Video Games, Moderation, and the Impact of Attentiveness on Children

Hey guys,

I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about an issue that is very dear to my heart. Video games.

Now if you follow any of my social media sites, you will know that I love posting, talking, and taking pictures about food. The one word I ALWAYS use whenever I post a picture of food, or a recipe, is MODERATION. I am one of those people that truly believe in all things in moderation. Having too much of any good thing is a bad thing. And I believe that this applies to video games (and most everything)as well. Hell, at my age, even reading should be done in moderation.

I am not old, by any means, but I do have a family to take care of. I cook, I clean, I fold laundry, I organize baby toys, and my own "toys" and hobby equipment. I make sure the calendar is up to date, and balance the budget, and make sure we take time for our family. I also eat healthy, and exercise, and watch my friend's children, in order to help her lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

But, I also, love playing video games. And video games can be addictive. there are plenty of research studies that prove that. I've seen and heard of men and women who fly into rages at the loss of a game. There is a whole culture of gamers out there that thrive on the newest, the greatest, the classics, and the oldest games out there. Their love of games knows no bounds. And that is wonderful. our culture accepts these people into their fold with no problem, because our culture has room for another "sub-genre" of people in it. Yes, are these kids bullied, and yes, are these adults who love all things video game, comic book, graphic novel, manga made to feel belittled and ostracized sometimes? yes. But that is because, unfortunately, our culture also has room for arrogant, belittling, mean, bullies who were never taught kindness, love, or respect of another human being.

I am here to say that this should not be the case. Everyone has seen the article and read the studies about how video games are evil and warp the minds of the young and eat up valuable money and time, blah blah, blah.

I have not conducted my own personal study of this, so if that's what you are looking for, this isn't the place for you.

I think that yes, video games CAN influence children, if they do not have other, positive influences in their life. I believe that our children should be slightly censored against video games. And I do believe that video games, if played incorrectly, can have a negative impact of a person's social life and bank account.

Let's get into it.

Do I think that children can be influenced by video games? yes. 100%. IF there isn't a good and well balanced support system in place to help nurture that child. If you were to lock a five year old into a room and let him play Grand Theft Auto (GTA) for instance, yes, he would probably start to mimic the things that he sees in this game. Because that's what a five year old will do! they are little human shaped sponges, waiting to suck up any and all information there is out there! And if you too him into a room where everything was set up, like in the video game, he would most likely go on kicking, punching, shooting, and destroying everything he sees. But, if this child's guardian then came into the room and told him to stop. He would. Why? Because children seek guidance. That is why he repeats what he sees in the game. he uses it as a learning tool. Which, it is not intended to be. Should a guardian tell him that stealing from people and kicking, punching, and causing chaos is wrong, this would simply start to shape his morals into what they will be when he is an adult. This is called teaching.

By no means do I think that you should expose your child to violent games and such just to teach them right from wrong. What I do think, is that parents need to realize that when a child sees something that they deem bad, they need to not freak out and call a stop to it, but instead, use it as a teaching moment.

That being said, I do think that parents need to be aware of what children are watching nowadays. Back when I was a child, most rated M games or rated R movies were boring. They were dark, and sometimes scary, and full of bad words that, because I knew they were bad, made me blush and shy away from them. Now, games like Saints Row and GTA are brightly colored and full of fun music, laughing, running around, and child like things such as teddy bears, bright "Hotwheels" type cars, and popular music. This draws children in, instead of making them shy away. And if you are actively playing the game, and enjoying shooting an old woman or humping a car until it breaks, then your child will believe that these things are socially acceptable and appropriate. If, while you are playing your game, you explain that it is make believe, and that the things in the game are inappropriate, your child will probably ask you why you are playing it and about 1,000 questions about the game and the actions in the game. Have fun explaining yourself.

There are plenty of fantasy games out in the world that aren't as extreme as these two games I have previously mentioned, and obviously those are extreme cases. And by no means am I saying that these games are evil! if you like them, then play them! They are a great source of entertainment. They are not evil at all, they just might not be the most productive games to play around a child.

I think that out of all this though, the biggest obstacle that gamers face is time. Getting sucked into a game is the easiest thing in the world. The plot draws us in, the mystery, the suspense, the terror, the feeling of triumph, all these things envelop us and pull us into a sweet embrace, lulling us to play the game for hours and hours. If you have the time and the inclination for that, they go for it. But for most people in the world, balancing video games and everything else in our lives is the most difficult challenge. there is so much to do in a day, and if video games are controlling 40% of your day, then you are stopped from being productive (when you need to be).

I've had those days when I have had a list as long as my arm of stuff to get done, and instead I am in front of the TV, a litre of water between my legs and a controller in my hands. But I've also had those days where i have nothing else i need to do, and I can devote a couple hours to playing. And that, is honestly one of the best feelings. i get to sit back and enjoy the game, with no twinges of guilt and no consequences. I, obviously, have a little one to take care of, so I take frequent breaks and let her play in the load screens, and even let her play her own game if she's so inclined. She's two, so she becomes bored quite quickly and moves onto something else, so I can play my game for another half hour and take a break again. Or, my husband and I will take turns watching her while the other one plays.

This is the most important example we need to set for our children. Content is parent regulated. If you think that your child is old enough to understand that stealing cars and killing people is bad, then that is your call 100%, but the time you devote to games should always be done in moderation. I devote one hour of my day to playing video games, sometimes less, sometimes none. I have a lot on my plate, and it brings me satisfaction to know that I have allocated my time properly and efficiently.

If your child sees you doing ANYTHING for an extended period of time, then they will thing that this is how time is allotted. If you've ever been playing a game, but dinner is ready, and you call out "Five More Minutes", expect that the next time our child is playing, they will ask for more time. if you are reading, and you stay up all night reading this novel because you HAVE to finish it, expect that when your child is reading or playing, and you tell them lights out, they will be reluctant. Children imitate life. Especially the lives of their guardians. Everything in moderation. Reading exercise, video games, movies, TV shows, everything. If you truly want your child to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle, you need to emulate that for them. There is of course room for video games, TV shows, and movies in a healthy lifestyle. just because it's a healthy lifestyle doesn't mean you need to cut out all forms of entertainment. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter all drag us in once in a while. But setting a timer will allow you allocate your time wisely instead of spending all Saturday binge watching Orange is the New Black or the last season of Supernatural.

Trust me, I have been there. But priorities and lifestyles change when you become a parent. Your life, immediately becomes an example for this child, whether you want it to or not. "Do as I say, not as I do," does not fly. If anything, it teaches your children to be hypocritical and mischievous, instead of honest and adventurous.

Obviously, this is only my opinion. I don't have all the figures and numbers to back myself up, but I'm sure the Internet is full of educational material about video games affecting children. Go explore the depths of the Internet to either smash my opinion into the ground, or just go look for interesting games to play on your smart phones.

Just makes sure that you set a timer.

Warm wishes,

Hey All, Just an update

Hello all ,

I just wanted to get you up to date on what is going on in my life. My computer somehow died, and as that is, I am unable to do full reviews and videos. It takes me a long time to actually be able to film and edit videos, especially because I am having trouble with lighting and such. I am working on getting all of this fixed. Until then, I will be doing nothing for the next week and a half. This is very frustrating, but I am doing the best I can with what I have. I will be back around May 11th, but in the meantime, enjoy my old videos and my old posts, and hopefully the next time I see you lot will be when I have a new setup and a new lighting and sound system.

I hope you all forgive me and I hope to see you very soon.

XO Caitlynne

No Puppies Here

Hey guys,

So I wanted to let you know what is happening now, and keep you updated about what is going on with the blogging/beauty video situation.

Tomorrow, you would normally get a Man's Best friend post, but I will be in Ottawa all day with my best friend instead! i hope you will forgive me! You will definitely get one next week, so make sure you check that out when you can. I am "babysitting" an adorable little Collie/Hound/Beagle mix named Chopper. Her daddy is on a business trip and couldn't find a place for her to stay for the next couple of weeks, so when he asked if I could do it, I was so excited! I love dogs of all types, and I am one of those people who believes that every dog is born good, and has a great heart; Chopper is no different. She is the sweetest thing ever and she gets along great with my two babies. I was so thrilled to be able to watch her for such an extended period of time because I think it will really let me get my confidence up when it comes to taking care of other dogs. I am so excited to test myself.

So, I will be posting tons and tons of pictures on Instagram, so make sure to follow me there @caitlynnescagel and make sure you check out my videos that WILL be up next week. I know that I have been horrible at posting videos, and I am so sorry for that, but I have been crazy busy, and unlike with the blog, I can't preload any videos onto YouTube. With the blog, I can knock out five or six posts in a day and then preschedule them, but with Youtube, not only do i have to edit all the videos, but I can only post them one at a time, so if I am crazy busy on that day, I can't know when I will be able to upload. It really sucks, but that is why my videos have been all over the place lately. Next week, because I will officially have my blogging area set up, I will have videos up every day that I can manage.

I hope that you continue to follow me on my social networking sites because that would mean the world to me! I am just starting out, so I am trying my hardest to do what I can for you guys. And I know that my pictures are horrible quality, but if you stick with me for about nine more months, I will have a brand new camera and tripod and lights and everything set up, so I will be able to give you amazing, high quality videos. So please keep reading and comment, subscribe, like, whatever you have to do to support me as a blogger and vlogger.

I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I can't wait to show you the amazing things I am about to get up to!

Warm wishes.

My life Randomness right now...

Hello everyone!

OMGOSH! Several things.

#1 I get to see my BFFL in four days!!!! FOUR!

#2 My hubby has been working his BUTT OFF to finish the basement, which means that soon, I will have my blogging area back, and I could not be happier.

# 3 This means I will have my XBOX (oh, hello Two Worlds 2, do you come here often?) and my television back (Nigella and Jamie, I miss you so much).

#4 I get to see le BFFL in FOUR days. I don't believe I mentioned that.... #5 Our Easter was great. I did everything on a budget that cost a total of $36 for all the basket, candy, wine, and presents for our family. I reused bags and tissue paper and pulled cards out of my stash to pull everything together. I even made Ella a princess costume for her present! I was very excited.

#6 Because BFFL is coming into Ottawa on Friday, I am going to try out my BECCA primer and my Lancome foundation samples that I got from Sephora a few weeks ago. I hope they work and I am so excited to try them.

#7 Also because BFFL is coming, I get my DIVERGENT PALETTE!!!! My mom was MOM-MAZING and got it for me, and she is bringing it with her to Canada, so I promise lots and lots of reviews and tutorials. We will be filming a haul together and I will be doing BFFL's make up with the new palette.

#8 BFFL will be able to see the church we are getting married at and the reception location, as well as the location for the afterparty!

#9 I think I found the salon that I am getting my hair, make up and nails done at for my wedding! So excited!

#10 I actually don't have anything here... I just liked having ten things, so I will say a silly one.... I love my little baby girl! She is so cute!

I hope you all have an amazing day and I can't wait to talk to you again!

April's Challenges

Hello to all my lovely readers,

I'm sure there are about three of you out there, but for you three, I wanted to let you know what has been happening in my life, and what I am doing as far as exercise goes for April. As you might know, in order to keep myself active, and accountable, I do a different exercise challenge every month. And then here, I keep a diary of sorts. I know that we are about two weeks into April already, but better late than never.

We have been renovating, as I'm sure you already know. I have been hemming curtains, refinishing furniture, and trying to keep the baby happy, the house clean, meals made, laundry done, and still be able to read, sleep, and exercise. So, unfortunately blogging and videos have fallen to the wayside. Maybe that means I'm not meant to be a blogger. I like to think of it as being a bad multi tasker and a better mother, but I'll let you make that call. I also don't really have a place to blog or call my own right now. My camera battery was misplaced from the camera to the charger, and then my husband moved all of the things from the main room of the basement to the storage room, with no real rhyme or reason (to me) so I haven't had access to all of my make up, scrap booking, or even to a calm space that i can film. Most days I have to scrape together a blog with a screaming baby in the back ground and try not to scream at the top of my lungs in frustration. Luckily, the basement is getting done next, and though it is a larger room than any my husband has done, it also has nothing in it, and is essentially a large square with a staircase attached to it. No closets or anything like that to get hung up on, and nothing in the middle of the room to be careful of or to hinder his movement. He really is being a saint by painting all of these rooms, by himself, getting up early everyday to do it. Such a saint. But I am a greedy, greedy human being, and I cannot wait for the basement to be finished so that I can have carpet and decorated area to blog and film my heart out. This is why the blog has been so crazy. between me trying to actually do the things that I want to blog about, having a life, exercising, having a crazy two year old running around, and having no space to do my thing, the blog has fallen to the wayside. But because i made this commitment to myself and to the three of you reading right now, I will make a more concerted effort next week to blog and film and post and all that good stuff. I am even thinking about trying to film us putting the guest room together. That is what has been holding me up, and what has been happening in my life thus far. Now, onto more important matters.

For April, I made up my own challenge. I have been blabbering on and on, for a few months now, about how nice it would be to join a new exercise class. On our last posting, I joined an Aquacise class and a Bootcamp class, and I loved it! I loved listening to the other women talk about their lives, their husbands, their kids, their houses, and their bodies. I loved working and sweating and being joined with other women who were working and sweating. My husband loves to go to the gym. Loves it. With a passion that rivals the love he has for his own child. I, on the other hand, am not a gym bunny. (Yes, that is actually what women are calling themselves now.) I enjoy going with him, but it isn't like exercising with another woman.

My best friend and I used to go to the gym once or twice a week together for about a year. And it was fun! We exercised on the same equipment, we laughed, oogled men, talked about fashion and make up and deodorant and work and whatever else we wanted to talk about. We helped each other on the machines and then showered and changed and got ready to go out afterwards, in a normal, girly, talking, giggling fashion. The gym, is not like that with my husband. At all. We do not talk. We do not laugh. We do not oogle, or snicker, or giggle, or cheep, or wiggle our eyebrows suggestively. We work out, him with his ear buds in, and me, watching him, listening to other people have conversations with each other.

Now, don't get me wrong, my husband and I talk more than the average couple. I actually read recently average couples, who have been married within ten years, only talk for 40 minutes during an hour long meal. And they normally only have one meal a day together.  Yes, that is an actual statistic. My husband and I share one or two meals a day, depending on how busy we are, and of course, depending on if he is home or not. And during that time we talk while I cook, while we eat, and our meal times are on the upwards of two hours so that we can fully talk and enjoy each other and our little one. We talk while we clean up the kitchen, and play with the baby, and we even have a horrible habit of talking during movies and tv shows we watch. We just talk and talk and talk and talk. Always. But at the gym, we are silent. He works hard, and he also, I think, wants to be seen as a tough guy. I suppose no man wants to be seen talking and laughing with a woman, unless he is hitting on her, and my husband and I have passed that point in our relationship. So, he works, and I watch, and work with him a little, but it isn't very fun honestly.

And that isn't even considering the baby. Normally, I take her, so he can work out. Which is sometimes frustrating, but i understand that where he works out with all the beefcakes and muscleheads, there is a lot of heavy lifting and slamming things, high jumping and handstand pushups, machinery and not a lot of space, and of course round house kicks, five finger death punches and wrestling alligators. Okay, not those last three. But you get the picture. So, I take her to the nice, safe, openness of the track where I try and run in my normal fashion (which I despise; I feel like a walrus running whilst pushing a pram.) and then I normally wind up walking around the oblong track endlessly, while my husband finishes fighting ninjas and taming lions in his corner of the gym. And all of this leads to me having a quite unsatisfying work out, and we don't see much of each other anyhow, so why bother?

This brings me to my newest bright idea. I will work out in the great outdoors while it is lovely and nice out, and then I will force myself to drag my tired bones to the gym and do exercise tapes when the weather gets nasty and cold again. So now that that life altering decision has been made, I move to the actual challenge for this month: running and classes.

I have been going to two classes at our recreation Complex, or the RexPlex as we call it, two days a week, and running the other three days. I have been doing a Kickboxing class, which I adore, and I wish I could go twice a week, and a Step class, that I had been going to, but I think I might switch to another program because of many reasons, among them is my lack of coordination in all things aerobic. I haven't decided what i am going to replace it with, but I need to find something very quickly. So, for the entire month of April, every tuesday and Thursday, I get up at 7:30 am and get moving so that I can go to my fitness classes. And so far, I am loving it. I haven't missed one week, and I couldn't be happier with the environment and the workouts I have been getting. Most days, my arms and legs feel like jello, and I am exhausted by 12 everyday, but to me, it is worth it.

This brings me to the second part of the monthly challenge: running. Now, I am not a fan of running. You can ask my husband, I have cried on runs before. Moving that far, that fast, hurts, and is tiring, and is hard work, so I hate it, but it also gives me the best sense of accomplishment ever. My least favorite thing to do, is run while pushing the jogging stroller. It isn't pretty. And it feels awkward and unnatural, but I do it, because I don't have another choice. Some days, when my husband is actually home, I get him to watch the baby while I run, which is what I will be doing today, but most days, I run with the baby in the stroller, and I huff and puff and groan and struggle through it, but I do it. I persevere.

So, that is my challenge for this month. two classes a week and three days of running a week. It isn't easy, but I do it because I want to be healthy, and I love the thrill of victory, the pleasure of success, and the overwhelming joy of accomplishment.
